About the price

Solutions for the Public Sector will present an annual sustainability award covering environmental issues, social responsibility and governance issues.

Around 75 per cent of the targets in the 2030 Agenda are to be implemented at local level, which makes local efforts crucial to achieving the goals. We take as our starting point the Agenda 2030’s holistic approach to sustainable development, in which social, environmental and economic sustainability are integrated and interdependent.

The ‘Sustainable Municipality of the Year 2026’ award places particular emphasis on initiatives in the areas of the environment, social responsibility and good governance; these areas are also closely linked to economic sustainability. Promoting environmental and social values, as well as transparent management, also creates long-term economic value. Sustainable development therefore requires a holistic approach in which all elements work together.

This can range from new strategies, procurement methods, training programmes or partnerships to technical innovations.

The jury’s reasoning

Through long-term and consistent efforts, Skellefteå Municipality has demonstrated how sustainable development can be pursued in a broad and integrated manner – environmentally, socially and economically. The local authority works systematically across organisational boundaries, combining strategic collaboration with concrete measures that deliver measurable results.

From significantly reducing the environmental impact of construction and civil engineering projects to social initiatives that strengthen security, participation and a sense of community in residential areas, Skellefteå demonstrates how sustainability becomes a reality in people’s everyday lives. The work has been ongoing for some time, has developed step by step and has had a clear impact – both locally and as a source of inspiration for others.

By combining growth with responsibility, innovation with collaboration, and ambition with the ability to deliver, Skellefteå Municipality has been named Sustainability Municipality of the Year 2025.

Practical information

The ‘Sustainable Municipality of the Year 2026’ award will be presented at the Kistamässan exhibition centre in Stockholm on 27 January 2027 as part of the ‘Solutions for the Public Sector’ event

As this is about sustainability, there is no physical prize; instead, the prize consists entirely of the honour. But that makes the honour all the greater! The aim of the award is to highlight good examples of how Sweden’s public sector is contributing to a more sustainable society with a reduced environmental and climate impact.

Registration is open until 16 October

Anyone who works actively and systematically on sustainability as a key driver for developing their operations and the local authority as a whole is welcome to enter the competition for the ‘Sustainable Local Authority of the Year 2026’ award.
