The new demographic reality – how do we prepare the local authority for the future?

Sweden’s local authorities are facing some of the most critical challenges of modern times. An ageing population, a declining proportion of the population of working age and significant regional disparities are putting pressure on the economy, the supply of skilled labour and welfare – whilst demand for services shows no sign of abating.

In many smaller and rural municipalities, younger residents are moving to the cities for work and study. The tax base is shrinking, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain services, infrastructure and the quality of welfare provision. In growing municipalities, the challenge is quite different: there, the focus is on rapidly expanding housing, schools and public services at a pace that keeps up with population growth.

What all local authorities have in common is that fewer people are having to support more. This calls for new solutions – greater efficiency, digitalisation, new ways of working and a more strategic approach to skills provision and attractiveness.

During the Local Government Leadership Day you will gain practical tools and inspiration to tackle demographic challenges, have the opportunity to explore research, statistics and best practice from local authorities across the country, and have time to discuss and network with other local government leaders who are grappling with the same issues.
